To try and create beautiful living areas where things are a bit boring and drab.

Done, and dusted.

Ready for guests. Not quite where I want it yet, but soon… 🙂

At last.

Yes, it is done! I can at last say that the guesthouse is done. I’ve even had guests stay already! And a couple more bookings coming up. I am grateful and relieved. 🙂

I am also very, very broke after this little exercise, but hopefully that will be remedied by enough bookings pouring in over the next few months.🤞🏻 (From my mouth, to God’s ears…)

Of course, as with most reno’s, there are still things to be done, but those are minor compared to the big changes and building that is now done. I want to get/make some art for the walls, which are too bare for my liking. Some more/bigger area rugs to cozy the place up. And one or two practical things to add to make people’s stay here as comfortable as possible. And I definitely need to ‘prettify’ the space outside the second unit, which used to be a place where we put things that were in the way… But I need some money first, and for that I need bookings. We have cleaned it up and painted the walls, so at least it is tidy now. So please, hold thumbs for me, that the guests book both units regularly from now on.

I am still enjoying my SO’s company. He came down for a ‘quick’ two weeks to help with the building, and ended up staying quite a bit longer than planned. I am not complaining… 🙂

Winter is definitely on its way. I can feel it coming in the air – early mornings especially. Once again, I am not complaining. It is time. Our rainy season is about to start, so bring it on! Our dams are getting emptier by the day, so the cold and the rain can not come soon enough.

Can you see how empty this dam is? And this was taken about 3 weeks ago, so it is probably worse by now!

My last planting of tomatoes is not doing too well. Of course, they were planted a bit out of season, but I had hoped that I could get at least some tomatoes before the cold sets in. It seems like that is not going to happen. I am still hoping. I am going to enclose the plants in some thick plastic, and keep my fingers crossed that it will act like a hothouse.

I had a very quiet day today. It felt weird after the last while running up and down the whole time. I am just about ready to take Daisy for her walk, and then, that is that for the day.

So, Daisy was getting impatient, and I ended up taking her for her walk earlier than planned. Walk done and dusted. Now for an ice cold glass of wine, and feet up…

Guesthouse reno.

Guesthouse cottage from my back patio.

Hi! I’m still around, would you believe!! 😁

You can be forgiven for thinking or hoping ( 😉 ) that I’ve thrown in the towel on blogging, but sorry, no.

I’ve been busier than I’ve been in a very long time, and just did not have the time to sit and chat to you and download pictures. I also realized how much time blogging takes up, because it is not only about the writing, it is also reading and commenting on the blogs you follow. I did get behind – way behind! And it is difficult to catch up.

The guesthouse is still not a 100% done, but like I mentioned in the previous blog, the one unit is completely comfortable and livable – just a few things I still feel I want to do to add to the overall charm and comfort. The second unit is still some way from being finished. Oi…

Here are some pictures to give you an idea of the changes and the progress. I tried to give you some reference points so you can figure out what I’ve done.

Before : Counter between kitchen and dining area.
The counter built up, dining area now a kitchen/diner.
Nook behind the door – previously the linen and storage cupboard’s place.
Now the washing up nook.
Previously: the kitchen – lots of wasted space.
Now: Bedroom and bathroom.

So, those are the big changes!

The previous bedroom is now the whole second unit, and is the one that is still a work in progress, and I’ll update you later on that. To end up with, a picture or two of the living area.

Previously: The view from the kitchen. Lots and lots of wasted space.
Now: the view from the bedroom entrance towards the rest of the unit.

That’s it folks!

This is what has been keeping me busy lately, and it is not done yet. This coming week, I want to push for the second unit. By the end of the week, I want it done and listed for occupation. Let’s hold thumbs for that…🤞🏻

I apologize for not reading and commenting as regularly as I usually do, hopefully that will change again soon. In the meantime, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! 🙂

Still eating dust, and anybody else out there who’s had enough?

Nothing to do with my post, but a little island of calm in a mad world.

Yip.

Although things have moved along a bit with the alterations on the guesthouse, we are still eating dust, listening to noise and living in chaos.

I can see things changing drastically within about two working days (I really, really hope it does), but for now everything still feels crazy and uncomfortable.

I am upset about how we are all being manipulated by our governments. I am not a puppet on strings, and I cannot remember giving anyone the right to decide for me how I should live my life. Initially I thought it was a good idea to be cautious about this virus that seemed to have taken the world by storm, but now things are just plain ridiculous. At which point do you decide to return life to normal? Because at this rate it is never going to happen. How can you continuously close everything down every time a few more people get the virus? There are reports from all over about how unreliable the tests are for a start. The tests are unreliable, the vaccines are not safe, nobody seems to know for how long they will protect you, or if it is safe for pregnant women, older people, or anyone for that matter. Yet still nothing can return to normal. Businesses must continue to close down. People must continue to lose their jobs.

And yet, we accept all this without a word of protest, as if it is the way it should be…

Do you know the parable about the frogs? If you put them in cold water, make a fire under the pot, they will not even realize that they are in water that is constantly getting hotter and hotter, until they are cooked – and then it is too late.

Oi…a scary, scary thing to allow others to make all these decisions for us, don’t you think?

CHAOS !!!

This is where I would much rather be right now….Photo by Dario Fernandez Ruz on Pexels.com

I have no time to write!

I am going to quickly try and sneak in a few words, though.

We are busy building and changing the guesthouse, and it is chaos!! Noise, dust, dirt, stuff everywhere! I do not know if I should laugh or cry.

Eeeeekkkk!!!!
And even more eeeeeeeeekk…

I cannot do my washing anymore, because the only washing machine I’ve got is the one in the guesthouse, and they have now turned off the water to do the plumbing of the new bathroom. Eeeeek!!! There is not going to be space for the washing machine in there anymore, and there is no space for it in my house (weird I know, but true.). So until we’ve figured out a new plan, we are a bit screwed.

And I’m back – after having to run out again for something.

So, I’m not going to chat with you now, but wish me luck please, and also hold thumbs that my sanity doesn’t escape somewhere where I can’t find it…

Happy days are here again.

A scene between Villiersdorp and Grabouw in the Western Cape.

A new week has begun.

And I am a happy camper at the moment! 🙂 My significant other arrived Friday evening around 8 pm., and we’ve had a busy weekend of looking for and buying some of the fittings needed for the reno of the guesthouse, as well as exploring and visiting a ‘new’ town (this time one of the oldest towns in the country, Tulbagh, ca. 1699) one of our favourite pastimes. We also managed to fit in a quick visit to my son. The weekend flew by!

Having lunch with Daisy at Hussar Grill in Paarl.

The builders have arrived, and they are just about to start doing some of the walls that need to go up to change the one guest cottage into two separate units. Happy days! I am at once very excited and very nervous. I’m quite sure it’s the right thing to do, so I’m hoping that we manage to do everything in the time I’ve allowed for it, and that we don’t have too many hitches in the completion of the task. And most of all, I’m hoping that everything looks professional and beautiful when we’re done – I don’t want anything to look scruffy and rushed.

I’ve once again realized that life is so much more fun if you don’t have to do it on your own. Sharing the everyday things with someone just makes things so much more manageable and less daunting.

There is a definite change in the air – autumn is well and truly here! I love having to cover up, especially at night. Being too hot to sleep has never been my favourite thing, so snuggling in under the duvet is a treat and a half!

Vine leaves turning red on my son’s veranda.

Good luck for the week ahead, I hope it meets your expectations! 🙂
