Happy days are here again.

A new week has begun.

And I am a happy camper at the moment! 🙂 My significant other arrived Friday evening around 8 pm., and we’ve had a busy weekend of looking for and buying some of the fittings needed for the reno of the guesthouse, as well as exploring and visiting a ‘new’ town (this time one of the oldest towns in the country, Tulbagh, ca. 1699) one of our favourite pastimes. We also managed to fit in a quick visit to my son. The weekend flew by!

The builders have arrived, and they are just about to start doing some of the walls that need to go up to change the one guest cottage into two separate units. Happy days! I am at once very excited and very nervous. I’m quite sure it’s the right thing to do, so I’m hoping that we manage to do everything in the time I’ve allowed for it, and that we don’t have too many hitches in the completion of the task. And most of all, I’m hoping that everything looks professional and beautiful when we’re done – I don’t want anything to look scruffy and rushed.

I’ve once again realized that life is so much more fun if you don’t have to do it on your own. Sharing the everyday things with someone just makes things so much more manageable and less daunting.

There is a definite change in the air – autumn is well and truly here! I love having to cover up, especially at night. Being too hot to sleep has never been my favourite thing, so snuggling in under the duvet is a treat and a half!

Vine leaves turning red on my son’s veranda.

Good luck for the week ahead, I hope it meets your expectations! 🙂

Easing into winter…

I’m back with the topic of autumn.

It is an ending and a beginning at the same time. The end of summer, and intense heat. The end of growth – in nature, that is. The end of having to swim or take cold showers three times a day to cool off. The end off lying awake at night, too hot to breathe.

The beginning of the slow glide into winter. The beginning of starting to wear cardigans, and long sleeve T’s. The beginning of taking an early bath and putting on PJ’s to spend the rest of the evening cozy on the couch. The beginning of a different menu – more stews, soups and other comfort food. The beginning of nature’s regeneration through winter.

No wonder it is so many people’s favourite season…

hath such grace,
As I have seen in one autumnal face... "

“And the sun took a step back, the leaves lulled themselves to sleep, and Autumn was awakened.” ~ Raquel Franco

I found this beautiful line on an Instagram friend’s post a few days ago, and it spoke to my heart. I subsequently discovered Raquel Franco’s writing and I love it. Mostly short and sweet, and very descriptive.

I said before that I love autumn. It is the slow turning of the leaves (it happens very slowly in South Africa), the gradual drop in temperatures, the shortening of the days that makes me so happy.

It is not a spectacular season here as in, say, Canada, but sometimes in some areas, it can be very beautiful…

I am planning to enjoy every moment of this changing of the seasons, and to get my home ready for the colder weather to come.

The leaves in the vineyards are starting to turn, and just sometimes, they turn a gorgeous red, which makes beautiful pictures. I will wait for that to happen…
