Spicing it up.

Posted on
My tiny chilli plant really delivered this time!

I do love spicy food.

By that I don’t mean food that burns my lungs out, or makes my tongue go numb, but I do love spices, and lots of it! Food can be spicy without any heat, of course! I generally like using spices in all my food, not only curries. I enjoy Indian and Thai food, and a mild to not-quite-so-mild sting is fine, as long a I can still taste my food. I also love Middle Eastern food, and Chinese flavours.

The other day I realized that I haven’t had a bit of spicy heat for some time, and the weather was perfect for some comfort food, so I decided to make a mutton curry (I prefer mutton to lamb.) I mostly do not follow recipes, so I cannot give you a recipe for this, but it did come out flavoursome and moreish.

First I fried some onions, fresh garlic and ginger, and spices together, then I added the meat to give it some colour.

I then added some tomatoes and water, and left the curry to cook slowly for a couple of hours.

I love using veggies in my curries, so close to the end I added potato cubes, baby marrow and a few florets of cauliflower. Served on Basmati rice, and voila!! Delicious.

My most used spices for curries are S & P (of course!), turmeric, coriander, fresh chillies (or chilli flakes, depending on what I’ve got handy), sometimes cumin and a piece of whole cinnamon. I taste and taste and taste until it has the degree of heat I want, the curry flavour I love.

Other favourites are butter chicken, and Thai green chicken curry. I want to explore and try out other curry styles like Madras, tandoori, tikka, etc., so I’ll be eating a lot of the good stuff during the winter months!

Let me know what your favourite curries or spicy foods are, and which one’s you’ve made yourself.

Have a good weekend folks! 🙂

About this and that.

Canola and sun.

Heat. Heat. HEAT!!!

I’m melting. I’m exploding. I’m boiling. I can’t breathe. I went to bed with a gigantic headache last night. I can’t sleep.

You understand what I’m saying? I can NOT stand the heat.

I know I’ve said it before, and I’m sorry to keep harping on about it, but it is bad at the moment, and it is nearly the only thing on my mind.

I am grateful that we are on the way to winter, even if the warmest month of the year is still ahead (Feb.)

On a different track, we are already in the fourth week of January! It was New Year’s only a few days ago, wasn’t it? I’m alarmed at the speed that time is passing… I’m still thinking ‘when things get going, I’ll…’, so I better get my backside in gear, and realize that the year is actually already in full swing.

I had a tiny change done to the guesthouse, as a prelude to the bigger changes I want to do there (remember my previous post on that?)  I took out an unused backdoor, and put in a window for some more light. (It is going to be a bedroom when I’m done.) I love the change! Now I have to get on with the rest…

Tomorrow, in the dark hours of the morning, my SO* is heading back up north to attend to business, while I will stay here, trying to keep things ticking over. Never something I’m excited about,  but that’s the way things are, so we have to get on with it!

It is going to start cooling down now, and then I can breathe freely again – yay!

*SO – Significant other.

Go where the sun doesn’t shine.

You know how some people in UK and other northern countries escape their winters by going to Spain?

Well I want to do the exact opposite. I want to flee from our summer to colder climes, somewhere where there are lots of snow, and I can wear coats and boots and scarves. (I can think of one place where I’d like to be right now, more than any other place on earth…) The temperature here at the moment is 39° C, and I for one do not find that very amusing – quite the opposite, in fact.

Since childhood I’ve had a low tolerance for heat, and that has never changed. I think the stork got confused when he had to deliver me, and dropped me off in the wrong spot, to be honest.

Fortunately my house is very old and has super thick walls, which helps the inside to stay cooler. Unfortunately if you stay inside to escape the heat, you still feel the heat, and I don’t have an AC.

So, today I am hiding from the heat – if you are looking for me, I’ll be over here, right in front of the fan, as far away from outside as I can get…
